Room To BreathePsalm 31:8

Clear Space Never Had To Earn Its Keep

This message is for the woman who feels guilty about an empty shelf and cannot say to whom she owes it

There are eleven inches of empty shelf in your kitchen and you feel slightly guilty about them.

That is a strange sentence and it is completely accurate. You cleared that stretch about a month ago and nothing has gone back on it, and every time you notice it there is a very small tug.

Not guilt exactly. Something adjacent. A sense of an unused thing, and an awareness that there are items in that house without a good home, and a quiet arithmetic that puts the two together.

Here is the question I want to put to you, and it is a genuine one.

Who do you owe it to?

Because guilt requires a creditor. Somebody has to be owed something for guilt to be the right word, and when you go looking for who is owed those eleven inches, there is nobody there.

Not your family, who have not noticed. Not a visitor, who would not comment. Not God, who has never once in scripture asked anybody to account for space.

So there is a debt with no creditor operating in your kitchen, and it has been doing it for a month.

Clear Space Never Had To Earn Its Keep

He set my feet in a wide open room

There is a line in Psalm 31 that describes rescue in terms of floor space.

Thou hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room. (Psalm 31:8, King James Version)

Thou hast set my feet in a large room. That is something done to him and for him, not something he built or earned or arranged.

And it is set against being shut up in the hand of an enemy, which means the largeness of the room is the whole substance of the deliverance. Room, as a gift, described in exactly those terms.

You have been set in a large room, and no room given like that has ever once had to be paid for. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman feeling a small tug at eleven inches of shelf, and Psalm 31:8 makes the space a thing God provides rather than a thing anybody earns.

And notice that no purpose is attached to the largeness.

He is not set in a large room in order to do something. The room is the answer to the threat, and its size is its whole quality, and the psalm moves straight on without explaining what it is for.

You have room whose only quality is its size, and no space in that verse has ever once had to account for itself. The written word gives the large room as the deliverance and asks nothing of it, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a woman running an arithmetic she has never examined.

A debt with no creditor

Let me stay with the guilt, because it is worth naming precisely.

Guilt is a response to owing. It is a useful signal when there is a real obligation, and it is a malfunction when there is not, and the way to tell the difference is to name the creditor.

Name yours. Say out loud who is owed those eleven inches.

You are unable to name a creditor, and no obligation has ever once existed without one. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman trying to name who is owed a stretch of shelf, and Psalm 31:8 sets the room as a gift and never as an account.

And here is where I think it actually comes from, and it is not moral at all.

It is efficiency, wearing the clothes of conscience. An unused resource produces a small alarm in a competent person, and that alarm has learned to present itself as guilt because guilt gets acted on faster.

It is not conscience. It is inventory management with a moral costume on.

You have an efficiency alarm dressed as a conscience, and no efficiency alarm has ever once been a moral fact. The written word hands the large room over with no invoice, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a woman who has been mistaking a management instinct for a moral one.

Eleven inches, kept, for a week

So here is the assignment, and most of it has happened already.

Keep the eleven inches. Put nothing on them for a week, deliberately this time rather than by accident.

You are keeping something on purpose that you have been keeping by default, and doing it on purpose has never once made it more indulgent. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman looking at a clear stretch of shelf without a tug, and Psalm 31:8 sets the feet in a large room as a gift.

And when the tug arrives, do this with it.

Ask the question again. Who is owed this. And when no name comes, which it will not, let the tug go past unpaid, because a debt with no creditor cannot be settled and does not need to be.

You are letting something go past unpaid, and nothing unpaid like that has ever once come due. The written word gives the room and issues no account, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a woman looking at eleven inches and owing nobody.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who feels vaguely guilty about a shelf.

You have been set in a large room, and no room given like that has ever once had to be paid for. This is the last thing on this site and there is nothing after it. Psalm 31:8 says thou hast set my feet in a large room, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who dismisses a debt with no creditor.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You were never guilty about anything, you had an efficiency alarm in a moral costume, and nobody anywhere is owed eleven inches of your shelf. The written word gives the room as the deliverance and asks nothing of it, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you at that shelf today.

Eleven inches. Kept. Seven days. Owed to nobody.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Small tug about eleven inches of shelf, you are a debt with no creditor and nobody anywhere is owed it. Psalm 31:8 says thou hast set my feet in a large room, so by the Holy Spirit I dismiss you today in the name of Jesus.
  2. Efficiency alarm in the clothes of a conscience, you present as guilt because guilt gets acted on faster. The word hands over the large room with no invoice, and by the Holy Spirit I stop paying an account nobody ever opened.
  3. Father, You set my feet in a large room and You did not ask what the room was for. Your word says thou hast set my feet in a large room, so by Your Spirit I keep eleven inches of nothing for a week, and I owe it to nobody, and I let it be mine.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
