Empty Is Not Wasted

A gap does not last four days in your house.

That is not a criticism. It is an observation, and I suspect you have never made it about yourself.

Something gets used up, or moved on, or finally goes out the door, and there is a space, and within about seventy two hours something is in it.

And here is the thing you would say if I asked. You would say it makes sense. It is a waste to have a space with nothing in it when there is something that needs a place.

That is the sentence I want to look at.

Because behind it is a belief that space is only valuable when it is holding something, and that a gap is a small inefficiency waiting to be corrected.

That belief has run every room in your house for about twenty years and nobody has ever once put it against scripture. There is a whole institution in the law of Israel that exists to contradict it.

He gave the ground a year of doing nothing

There is a command in Leviticus about farmland that is economically extraordinary.

But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the LORD: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard. (Leviticus 25:4, King James Version)

One year in seven, the land produces nothing on purpose.

That is not a fallow rotation for soil science and it is not framed as an investment. It is called a sabbath for the LORD, which makes the emptiness itself the offering rather than a means to a better crop.

You are allowed a gap that does nothing, and doing nothing has never once been the same as being wasted. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man whose gaps last three days, and Leviticus 25:4 commands a whole year of a field producing nothing and calls it a sabbath.

And think about what that command cost.

A seventh of everything. In an agricultural economy with no surplus, God instructed a nation to leave a seventh of its productive capacity doing nothing, permanently, as an ordinance.

Nobody who obeyed that was ever going to feel efficient about it.

You have an ordinance that deliberately refuses efficiency, and efficiency has never once been the highest thing God asks of anybody. The written word makes an unproductive year into an offering by name, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a man who fills a gap in seventy two hours without deciding to.

What the filling is actually doing

Let me name what is happening in those seventy two hours, because it is not tidiness.

An empty space in your house produces a small discomfort. Not much, but enough. And putting something in it resolves the discomfort, which is why it happens fast and without deliberation.

So the filling is not a decision about storage. It is the relief of a small persistent unease about unused capacity.

You have been resolving a discomfort and never solving a storage problem, and no gap in that house has ever once actually needed filling. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man who has never once let a space sit, and Leviticus 25:4 sets aside productive capacity on purpose and calls it holy.

And here is the cost, which lands on you rather than on the house.

A man whose house has no unused capacity has no slack. Everything is at its maximum, all the time, which means every new thing that arrives is a problem rather than a thing, and it means there is nowhere in that house that is not working.

You have been living somewhere with no slack anywhere in it, and no room like that has ever once been able to let a man rest in it. The written word builds a seventh of the year into doing nothing, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a man who has not had an unused foot of space in twenty years.

One surface, unproductive, for a week

So here is the assignment, and it is the sabbath at domestic scale.

Clear one surface and put nothing on it for a week.

Seven days of one square foot doing nothing at all. Not resting between uses. Not available. Doing nothing, on purpose, because you decided it.

You are giving one square foot a sabbath, and a sabbath has never once needed to produce anything to be right. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man looking at a clear bench with nothing on it, and Leviticus 25:4 makes the unproductive year an offering to God.

And the discomfort will come on about day two.

Let it come. That is the actual exercise. The discomfort is the thing being addressed, and it can only be addressed by being felt and not resolved, and it passes and it gets smaller.

You are feeling something without resolving it, and that discomfort has never once been able to last a whole week. The written word commands an emptiness that produces nothing for a year, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a man on day two who has not put anything on a bench.
