Their ThingsJohn 11:35

His Clothes Are Still In The Closet

This message is for the widow being gently urged to move her husband's belongings, who wants to be near his things without a timeline

You opened it for something else.

That is how it happens. You were looking for a spare bulb, or the box with the winter things in it, and the door came open and there they were, in a row, exactly where they were.

And you stood there.

Somebody asked you about it again last month. Kindly, the way they all do, in the sentence they have clearly been practicing in the car. Something about it maybe being time, and about how it might help.

They mean well. Every single one of them means well, and you have been so gracious about it that none of them knows what happens after they leave.

I want to say one thing before anything else in this article, and I want it in plain words at the top.

Nothing in here is going to ask you to move a single item in that closet. Not today, not as a first step, not eventually.

Not one shirt. That row is not in anybody's way and it is not a problem to be solved, and the reason I can say that so flatly is that scripture is remarkably unhurried about grief and everybody around you has forgotten that.

His Clothes Are Still In The Closet

Jesus wept

There is a verse everybody can quote and almost nobody sits inside, and it is worth sitting inside today.

Jesus wept. (John 11:35, King James Version)

He knew. That is the part that makes this verse enormous. He knew, standing there, that in about four minutes Lazarus would be walking out of that tomb.

And He wept anyway.

The outcome did not cancel the grief. He did not move through the sorrow efficiently on the way to the good ending, and nobody in that account rushes Him, and the shortest verse in scripture is a record of God taking time over a loss He was about to reverse.

You are grieving in front of somebody who wept with the answer already in His hand, and that grief has never once been inefficient. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman standing in front of an open closet, and John 11:35 records the weeping of one who knew exactly what was coming.

And now look at what is not in that verse.

There is no instruction. Nobody tells Him to compose Himself. There is no timescale and no next stage, and the narrative simply stops and lets Him weep before it goes on.

You have been handed timescales by people who love you, and the text has never once issued one to anybody. The written word gives the weeping its own sentence and no schedule, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a woman who has been gracious about it every single time.

What the door is actually for

Let me say something about what happens when you open it, because I do not think anybody has asked you.

It is not remembering him. Remembering can happen anywhere. There is something about the specific physical fact of his things being where he put them that is different from remembering, and it is closer to being near him.

That is a real thing and it is not morbid and it is not stuck. It is the ordinary human use of objects, the same use scripture puts them to everywhere, and it happens to be the only one of its kind available to you.

You are near him in a way that memory cannot do, and being near him has never once been the same as refusing to move on. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who opened a door looking for a light bulb, and John 11:35 has God Himself take time in the presence of a loss.

And here is what the urging has actually done, which nobody intends.

It has made every opening of that door slightly furtive. You do it and you are aware that you are not supposed to, and a thing that was simple has acquired a small shame on top of it that was never there at the start.

You have had something simple made complicated by kindness, and the opening has never once been a thing to be ashamed of. The written word weeps without apology or explanation, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a woman who has started doing something in her own house furtively.

Open it on purpose

So here is the whole assignment, and there is nothing after it.

Open the door. Look. Close it again.

That is all of it. Nothing comes out, nothing gets touched, nothing is decided, and there is no second stage next week.

You are allowed to open it on purpose and take nothing out, and looking has never once obliged you to start anything. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman with her hand on a closet door, and John 11:35 lets a moment of grief stand with no instruction attached.

Here is why on purpose rather than by accident.

At the moment every sight of those clothes is an accident, which means the moment always catches its own way in, and a woman is always slightly on the back foot in her own bedroom.

Doing it deliberately changes who is in charge of the moment. You decide, you look, you close it. Same closet, same row of shirts, and you are not being ambushed.

You are the one who decides when that door opens, and that decision has never once been anybody else's to make. The written word gives the sorrow its own space and lets it be what it is, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a woman opening a door on purpose for the first time.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman standing in front of an open closet.

You are near him when that door is open, and nobody on earth has ever once been given the right to hurry you. I am not asking for one shirt and there is no next stage. John 11:35 says Jesus wept, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes a borrowed calendar off a widow.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You were never stuck and you were never refusing anything, you were being near him, and that is what people have always used objects for. The written word takes its time over a loss it was about to undo, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you at that door today.

Open it. Look. Close it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Calendar somebody brought into my house, you were practiced in a car and you were never once issued to me from heaven. John 11:35 says Jesus wept with the answer already in His hand, so by the Holy Spirit I set you down today in the name of Jesus.
  2. Small shame on that door, you turned something simple into something furtive in my own bedroom. The word gives the weeping its own sentence and no schedule, and by the Holy Spirit I open it on purpose and I am not ashamed.
  3. Father, You wept over a grave You were about to empty, and nobody in that account hurried You. Your word says Jesus wept, so by Your Spirit I stay near my husband's belongings without a timeline, and I open the door today, and I look, and I close it, and nothing comes out.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
