A Small Thing Done All The Way Through

You had a good day in March.

You remember it because you did about six hours of solid work on the house and at the end of it there was a visible difference, and you slept properly that night.

That was five months ago and it is still the most recent day you would describe that way.

Which means, by your own accounting, you have had one good day since the spring, and the other hundred and fifty were neutral at best.

That cannot be true. You have done things in those hundred and fifty days. Real things, with your hands, that needed doing and got done.

They just did not qualify, and I want to look at the qualification, because a bar set where yours is set means a man can work for five months and bank nothing.

Not feel nothing. Bank nothing. There is a difference, and the difference is why you are tired in a way that sleep does not touch.

A day that does not qualify does not go into the account. And an account that has taken one deposit since March will not carry a man much further.

Faithful over a few things

There is a sentence in Matthew that is famous, and people usually hear the reward half and skip what it is a reward for.

Thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things. (Matthew 25:21, King James Version)

Over a few things. That is the commendation. Not over a great many things, not over a season of unbroken effort. A few.

And the commendation is not conditional or partial. It is the full thing, spoken warmly, over a small quantity, by somebody who was not impressed by scale to begin with.

You are looking at a full commendation spoken over a few things, and the fewness has never once reduced it. Matthew 25:21 puts the whole approval on a small number, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present with a man taking stock of five quiet months.

Now set that beside your March.

Your bar requires six hours and a visible difference. That bar was not handed to you by the text. Somebody or something set it, and it is higher than the one heaven appears to be using, and you have been failing a standard that was never issued.

You have been grading yourself against a bar the text never sets, and that bar has never once been the one God brought to the table. The written word commends a few things by name, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a man who has been failing an exam nobody set.

Why the bar got that high

Here is where it usually comes from, and see whether it fits.

A man raises his bar when small efforts stop producing a feeling. And small efforts stop producing a feeling when they are not completed, because an uncompleted thing gives nothing back.

So the sequence is: things get left half done, half done things feel like nothing, and the mind concludes that only large things count. The conclusion is wrong but the evidence behind it was real.

You were drawing a reasonable conclusion from a broken sample, and the conclusion has never once been proof of anything about you. Matthew 25:21 keeps its approval on the few and not on the many, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land for a man who has been mistaking a pattern for a verdict.

And notice what a high bar actually does to a day.

It does not make you work harder. It makes you not start, because starting something that cannot reach the bar feels like wasting the energy, so the energy gets saved for a six hour day that comes around twice a year.

You have been saving yourself for a day that arrives twice a year, and the saving has never once been laziness on your part. The text approves a few completed things without qualification, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a man who has been holding his strength in reserve for months.

All the way through is the test

So what actually qualifies, if size does not?

All the way through. That is the test in the verse and it is the only one. Not big. Completed. The few things were faithful because nothing about them was left hanging.

And that is a test a tired man can pass today, which is the entire reason it is worth telling you about.

You are able to pass the actual test today without a six hour day, and a completed small thing has never once failed it. Matthew 25:21 speaks its whole commendation over a few, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man at a drawer after work.

Here is what all the way through means, precisely, because vagueness here is what has been costing you.

Everything out. Chosen through. Put back. Shut. Nothing about that drawer outstanding tonight, tomorrow or next month. No second stage, no returning to it, no mental asterisk.

You are doing one thing with no asterisk left on it, and an asterisk has never once been the same as a finished thing. The written word calls a few completed things faithful, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that land for a man who has not banked anything since March.
