You Are Allowed To Stop When It Is Done

This message is for the man who turns every finished task into the next one and never once stops

You do not stop.

That is not praise and it is not a complaint. It is a description of a mechanism, and I think it has been running for so long that nobody in your house, including you, sees it as a mechanism any more.

Here is what it looks like from the outside. You finish something. In the same moment, before the thing is even fully shut, your eye goes to the next thing, and the next thing becomes the current thing, and the thing you just finished never gets a moment of being finished.

So there has not been a finished thing in that house in years, not because nothing gets done, but because nothing is ever allowed to stand as done for even four seconds before the next job swallows it.

And you have paid for that.

Not in tiredness exactly. You are used to being tired. You have paid for it in something harder to name, which is that no amount of work in that house has ever felt like enough, and it will not, because nothing has ever been permitted to be enough.

This article is not going to ask you to do more. It is going to ask you to stop, once, on purpose, while something is finished.

And I already know that is the harder assignment.

You Are Allowed To Stop When It Is Done

Six days and then he stopped

There is a commandment that people remember the second half of and forget the first half is even there.

Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work. (Exodus 20:9, King James Version)

Read that as a permission and not as a demand, because that is how it functions where it sits.

Work is given a boundary here. Six days, and all the work, which is generous, and then a line. Not a suggestion about balance. A line drawn around work by the same voice that gave the work, in the same breath.

You are looking at a boundary God drew around work Himself, and that boundary has never once been something you had to earn. Exodus 20:9 gives the six days and the line in the same sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a man whose eye has already gone to the next thing.

Now here is what that says about the mechanism in your kitchen.

The stopping is not the reward for enough work. It is not the thing that happens when the list is clear. It was issued alongside the work, as part of the same arrangement, and it does not wait for a total.

You have been treating the stop as a wage, and it has never once been a wage and it was always a gift. The written word sets the limit on the same page as the work, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a man who cannot remember the last time he put something down.

What the machine costs

Here is the cost, and it is worth naming because it is not obvious.

A finished thing gives something back when it is allowed to be finished. A small settling, a moment of the room being different. That is what makes work bearable over years.

Your mechanism intercepts that moment every single time. The next job arrives before the settling does, so you have been doing the work and never collecting the thing the work is supposed to pay.

You were doing the labor and never once collecting what it pays, and that has never once been a fault in how hard you work. Exodus 20:9 hands the boundary over with the work rather than after it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land for a man who has been working uncollected for years.

And there is a second cost, which lands on the people in the house.

When nothing is ever finished, nobody else can help either. There is no place for anyone to hand anything over to, because the job is continuous. Your wife cannot finish something with you. Your children cannot see something end. The house has no punctuation in it.

You have been living in a house with no punctuation in it, and that has never once been because you were unwilling to let anyone in. The text puts a full stop into a working week by command, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a man who has just understood why nobody ever helps.

The stop is the assignment

So here is the whole of today, and the drawer is only the excuse for it.

One drawer. Everything out, put back what you want, shut it. Fifteen minutes.

Then walk out of the room. Not to do something else. Out, with the thing finished behind you, and the room left standing as it is.

You are allowed to walk out of a room with something finished in it, and walking out has never once been abandoning it. Exodus 20:9 draws the line around the work in God's own voice, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man in a doorway with his hand on the frame.

Your eye will go to the cupboard. That is not a temptation to resist heroically, it is just a habit doing what a habit does.

Let the eye go. Then walk out anyway. The whole of the assignment is in those four seconds and there is nothing else in this article that matters as much.

You are able to see the next job and walk out past it, and seeing it has never once obliged you to start it. The written word fixes a boundary on the work without apologizing for it, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that land for a man whose hand is on a doorframe and not on a cupboard.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man whose eye has already moved on.

You are allowed to stop while it is finished, and the stopping has never once been the part you had to earn. There is no system here and nothing to keep up. Exodus 20:9 gives six days for the work and then draws a line, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who gets a man out of a kitchen with one thing done.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You were never failing to work hard enough, you were never collecting, and the collecting was issued to you at the same time as the work. The text draws the line in the same sentence as the six days, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you in that doorway today.

One drawer. Then out of the room.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Machine that turns finished into next, you have taken nine years of settling off me and you were never a virtue. Exodus 20:9 gives six days for the work and then draws the line, so by the Holy Spirit I stop while it is finished tonight in the name of Jesus.
  2. Belief that stopping is a wage, you made rest into something I had to buy and the word issued it free. The text sets the boundary in the same breath as the work, and by the Holy Spirit I am done earning what was already given.
  3. Father, You bounded the work Yourself and You did it in the commandment and not as an afterthought. Your word gives six days for the work and then draws the line, so by Your Spirit I finish one thing tonight, and I walk out of the room, and I leave it standing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
