You have been waiting to be told it is all right.
Not consciously, and you would not have put it that way, but that is what has been going on. Somewhere in you there is a hearing scheduled, and at that hearing somebody with the authority to say so tells you that what you keep is fine, and after that you can stop feeling the way you feel about the back room.
That hearing is not scheduled. There is no such person and no such day.
And I do not say that to be bleak. I say it because a man can spend fifteen years in a waiting room that has no door on the other side of it, and the only thing that gets him out is somebody telling him plainly that the appointment is not coming.
Who was it going to be? Think honestly for a second.
Your father, who is not here. A brother who does not think about your house at all. Somebody official. A sentence in an article that finally covers your exact situation.
None of those were ever going to arrive, and part of you has known that for years and has kept waiting anyway, because the alternative is to decide it yourself, and deciding it yourself feels like cheating.
That is the thing I want to deal with today. Not the back room. The idea that your own decision about your own things does not count.

The pot and the rod were kept inside
There is a description in Hebrews of what was inside the most protected object in Israel.
Wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant. (Hebrews 9:4, King James Version)
A pot of bread that could not be eaten. A walking stick that had flowered once, decades earlier. Two slabs of stone.
That is what was in the ark. Not treasure, not tools, not anything with a use. Three kept things, held because of what had happened around them, inside the holiest container that nation had.
You are keeping things in the same category as the contents of that ark, and a kept object has never once needed a use to be right. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man who has been waiting fifteen years to be told it is fine, and Hebrews 9:4 lists three items held for what they carried.
And notice the absence in that verse.
There is no committee. No review. Nobody is recorded as having approved the pot or asked whether the rod was still necessary after forty years. The keeping stands on its own and the text simply describes it.
You are looking at a keeping that nobody ever audited, and no such audit has ever once been part of the arrangement. The written word lists what was kept and asks nothing about it, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a man sitting in a waiting room that has no door.
Why your own decision feels like cheating
Here is the mechanism, and it is worth naming because it is quiet.
Somewhere early on, the question of what a person keeps got classified as a question that other people settle. Probably it actually was, back when the house belonged to somebody else and the person in question was twelve.
That classification never got updated. So now, at forty five, in a house you pay for, a decision that is entirely yours still feels provisional until somebody else signs it, and there is nobody to sign it.
You were carrying a classification that belonged to a different house, and it has never once been updated by anybody. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man who has felt provisional in his own home for fifteen years, and Hebrews 9:4 describes a keeping that stands without a signature.
And here is the specific harm of waiting for a permission that cannot come.
It is not that you keep too much or too little. It is that nothing you do with your own things ever settles. Every decision stays open, pending a review, and a man cannot rest in a house where every shelf is awaiting a judgment.
You have been living with every shelf pending, and not one of them has ever once actually been under review. The written word records the ark's contents as settled and describes them with no hesitation at all, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a man who has not had a settled shelf since he was twenty.
Saying it as a decision
So the work tonight is a sentence with a particular grammar in it.
Pick up one thing you kept. Say out loud why you kept it, and then say that it is staying.
That second clause is the whole thing. It is not a request and it is not a defense. It is a decision, said in your own voice, in your own house.
You are stating a decision rather than making a case, and a decision has never once needed a second party. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man unwrapping something from a cloth at a table, and Hebrews 9:4 names what was kept without one word of justification.
And expect it to feel strange in the mouth.
Fifteen years of waiting has left you fluent in the language of the case and not at all fluent in the language of the decision. The strangeness is not a sign that you have overstepped. It is the sound of a man using a grammar he is entitled to and has not used in a long time.
You are entitled to the grammar of a decision, and that entitlement has never once been in doubt except in your own waiting room. The written word simply says what was inside and stops, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a man saying a plain sentence that feels odd to him.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man in a waiting room with no door.
You have the permission already and were never going to be handed it, and a keeping has never once required a signature. I am asking you for nothing out of that room. Hebrews 9:4 says wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who tells a man the hearing is not coming.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You were never waiting for an answer, you were waiting for a signature on a decision that was always yours, and the classification came from a house you moved out of thirty years ago. The written word lists what was kept and closes the matter, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you at that table today.
One thing. One reason. And then: it is staying.
Declare this over yourself
- Hearing I have been waiting fifteen years for, you were never scheduled and the man in the chair has been gone eleven years. Hebrews 9:4 says wherein was the golden pot that had manna, so by the Holy Spirit I close you today in the name of Jesus.
- Classification from somebody else's house, you say my things are theirs to settle and I left that house thirty years ago. The word lists a kept pot and a kept rod with no approval on them, and by the Holy Spirit I am done being provisional in my own home.
- Father, You kept a jar and a flowered stick and two stones in the holiest place there was and nobody ever audited it. Your word says wherein was the golden pot that had manna, so by Your Spirit I say what I keep is mine to keep, and I say it out loud, and it is staying.
