A Clear Counter Is A Convenience

A clear counter is useful.

You can put a bag down on it. You can make something without moving three things first. You can wipe it in four seconds instead of forty.

Those are real advantages and none of them is in dispute and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

Here is the question. When did it stop being useful and start being good?

Because it has. Somewhere along the line, in your house, an empty surface acquired a second meaning, and now a clear counter is not only convenient, it is right, and a counter with things on it is not only inconvenient, it is a small wrong.

That second meaning is doing an enormous amount of work and nobody has ever inspected it.

And this article is the inspection, because there is a category of things scripture explicitly removes from moral consideration, and a countertop belongs in it.

Let nobody judge you over a table

There is a line in Colossians that clears a whole class of external things off the moral table at once.

Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days. (Colossians 2:16, King James Version)

Food, drink, days, festivals. A whole category of visible, external, observable things, removed from anybody's jurisdiction to judge you by.

And these were not trivial matters at the time. They were the standard external markers by which a person's standing was assessed by everybody around them, and Paul simply takes the whole class off the table.

You have a counter that is useful and never righteous, and a clear surface has never once been a moral fact. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man who has quietly promoted a countertop, and Colossians 2:16 removes an entire class of external markers from judgment.

And notice that he does not argue about the merits.

He does not say that the food rules were unimportant or that the festivals were meaningless. He says let no man judge you in them, which is a statement about jurisdiction rather than about value.

You have something useful that nobody was given jurisdiction over, and useful has never once meant morally weighted. The written word settles who may judge rather than debating the practice, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a man whose counter has been promoted without his consent.

How a convenience gets promoted

Let me describe how the promotion happens, because it is quiet and it is almost always the same.

A useful thing gets done repeatedly. Repetition produces a standard. A standard, held long enough, starts to feel like a rule. And a rule about how things should be is one short step from a rule about how a person should be.

Nobody decides any of that. It happens by ordinary human habit over about a decade.

You have watched a convenience become a rule by ordinary habit, and no step in that chain has ever once been a decision you made. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man who never once promoted a countertop on purpose, and Colossians 2:16 removes the whole external category from judgment by name.

And here is the tell that it has happened.

A convenience produces mild annoyance when it is absent. A moral category produces something else, and that something else is what you feel at ten at night, and it is not annoyance and you know it is not.

You have been feeling something that annoyance cannot account for, and no convenience has ever once produced that particular weight. The written word takes external observances out of the jurisdiction of judgment, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a man who has been able to tell the difference all along.

Demoting it back

So here is tonight, and it is a demotion.

Leave one thing out on purpose. A board, two mugs, the pan. Go to bed with it there.

You are demoting something back to what it always was, and a demotion has never once been the same as letting a thing go. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man leaving a board on the side and switching the light off, and Colossians 2:16 clears a whole class of externals off the table.

And in the morning, run the test.

Look at it and ask whether a wrong has occurred. The answer arrives instantly and it is no, and the no is the demotion taking effect.

The counter is still useful. It will still be nicer clear tomorrow. That is all it ever was, and all it ever gets to be.

You are keeping the usefulness and dropping the verdict, and those two have never once had to travel together. The written word leaves the practice alone and removes the judgment, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a man looking at a board on a counter in the morning and feeling nothing about it.
