You stood there holding it.
Just for a second. You had made the tea and you turned round with the cup in your hand and there was nowhere to put it down, and your eyes went along the counter, and then along the table, and then you put it on top of something.
That happens maybe six times a day and it has never once registered as anything.
I want it to register today, because that small hesitation is the whole subject of this article and it is the last thing this site has to say.
Every flat surface in that house is holding something.
Not a mess. Not a disaster. Everything on every surface has a reason to be there and could be justified individually if anybody asked. The post is waiting, the bag is going out, the thing is for the school.
And the cumulative effect is that there is nowhere to put a cup down, and a woman who cannot put a cup down is a woman who cannot pause, and pausing is not a luxury.
So this is not about tidying. It is about one square foot with nothing on it, kept empty for no reason at all.

He brought me forth into a large place
There is a line in Psalm 18 that describes what deliverance actually felt like, and the image is spatial.
He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me. (Psalm 18:19, King James Version)
A large place. That is the picture of being rescued. Not a solved problem, not a finished task. Room.
He had been in a tight spot, pressed in, and the description of the rescue is that there was suddenly space around him, and the psalm treats that space as the good thing in itself.
You are brought out into a large place, and nobody has ever once had to justify the room in it. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman holding a cup and looking for somewhere to put it, and Psalm 18:19 makes space the shape of deliverance rather than a means to something else.
And notice the reason given for it.
Because he delighted in me. Not because the man had earned it or because the space was needed for a purpose. Delight, which produces room, which is exactly what generosity looks like when it is expressed in a house.
You have room given out of delight, and no space given that way has ever once needed a justification. The written word grounds the largeness in God's own pleasure, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a woman who has nowhere to set a cup down in her own kitchen.
Why every surface is full
Let me name what actually did this, because it is not carelessness.
Every surface in that house is doing a job. It is holding something on its way somewhere. The post on its way to being dealt with, the bag on its way out, the thing on its way to school.
Which means every surface is a staging area, and a house with no surface that is not a staging area is a house with no room to stand in it.
You have a house made entirely of staging areas, and not one of those surfaces has ever once been doing something wrong. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who could justify every single item on every single surface, and Psalm 18:19 makes room the substance of the rescue.
And here is what it costs, which is not about appearances at all.
A person needs somewhere to put something down in order to stop for a minute. The cup, the book, the bag, the hands. When there is nowhere, the stopping does not happen, and a woman who never quite stops is tired in a way that a tidy house would not fix.
You have been unable to stop because there is nowhere to set anything down, and the tiredness has never once been about the state of the room. The written word makes the large place the deliverance itself, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a woman who has not put a cup down without moving something in years.
One surface, empty, for a week
So here is the closing assignment of this whole site, and it is the smallest one.
Clear one surface. Small. And put nothing on it for a week.
Not as the start of a system. Not as a first step toward the rest of the kitchen. One square foot, empty, for no reason at all, for seven days.
You are keeping one space empty for no reason, and empty space has never once had to justify itself. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman looking at one clear stretch of counter, and Psalm 18:19 gives the large place as the gift and asks nothing of it.
And you will want to put something on it. Within about two days.
Something will arrive that genuinely needs a temporary home and that space will be the obvious place for it, and the whole assignment is to find somewhere else and leave the square foot alone.
You are defending something that produces nothing, and a thing that produces nothing has never once been a waste of a week. The written word delights first and gives room second, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a woman moving something to a different surface to protect an empty one.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman standing in a kitchen holding a cup.
You are brought out into a large place, and nobody has ever once had to justify the room in it. This is not the first step of a system and there is nothing after it. Psalm 18:19 says he brought me forth also into a large place, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who gives a woman one square foot for no reason at all.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You were never tired because of the state of the house, you were tired because there was nowhere to stop, and one empty foot of counter is where stopping happens. The written word makes space the shape of deliverance, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you at that counter today.
One surface. Nothing on it. Seven days.
Declare this over yourself
- Six second hesitation with a cup in my hand, you happen six times a day and I have never once noticed you. Psalm 18:19 says he brought me forth also into a large place, so by the Holy Spirit I clear one foot of counter today in the name of Jesus.
- Habit of justifying each surface, you are correct about each one and you left me nowhere to stop. The word makes room the substance of the rescue, and by the Holy Spirit I keep one space empty for no reason at all.
- Father, You brought a man out into a large place because You delighted in him, and the room was the gift. Your word says he brought me forth also into a large place, so by Your Spirit I keep one surface clear for a week, and I put nothing on it, and I let it produce nothing.
