I Am Not Ready And That Is Allowed

Three people have asked you about it this month.

Not unkindly. Every one of them cares about you and every one of them thinks they are helping, and they all have a timescale in mind that they have not told you about and that you can feel anyway.

Your sister thinks by Christmas. Somebody at work thinks it is odd already. There was a conversation in a car in June that you have replayed about forty times.

And underneath all of it is the assumption nobody has stated: that being ready is a thing that arrives on a schedule, and that yours is late.

Here is what I want to say before anything else.

You are not late. There is no schedule. The one that is being applied to you was not issued by God, it was assembled out of other people's discomfort with something they are watching and cannot fix.

That sounds harsh about them and I do not mean it harshly. Watching somebody you love sit still with something is genuinely hard, and a date is what a person reaches for when they want to help and have nothing to offer.

But a date reached for out of somebody else's discomfort is not a word about your life, and you have been carrying it like one.

A time to keep

There is a list in Ecclesiastes that everybody has heard, and there is a line in the middle of it that rarely gets read on its own.

A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away. (Ecclesiastes 3:6, King James Version)

A time to keep. It is right there, with equal weight, in the same sentence, given the same dignity as casting away.

The whole passage is built to say that both halves are real seasons and neither is a higher state than the other. Nobody in that chapter is graduating from keeping into casting away.

You are inside a time to keep, and the text has never once ranked that below the other one. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man who has replayed a conversation in a car forty times, and Ecclesiastes 3:6 names keeping as a season in its own right.

And now notice what the chapter conspicuously does not do.

It does not tell you which season you are in. There is no test in it, no duration, no signs to watch for. The passage insists both seasons exist and then says nothing at all about the timing, which is either infuriating or the most merciful thing in the chapter.

You have not been given a schedule by God, and nobody standing outside your house has ever once been issued one about you. The written word names both seasons and dates neither of them, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a man being asked about it for the third time this month.

Where the dates come from

Here is what is actually happening in those conversations, and seeing it takes the sting out.

Somebody who loves you is watching a situation that they cannot do anything about. That is uncomfortable to sit in. A date makes it bearable, because a date turns an open situation into a pending one.

So the date is doing a job, and the job is for them. It is not information about you, and it was never meant as an instruction, and most of the people saying it would be horrified to know how it has landed.

You were handed somebody else's comfort and heard it as a deadline, and it has never once been a deadline. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man who has been measuring himself against a date nobody actually set, and Ecclesiastes 3:6 gives keeping a season without a length.

And there is one more thing worth naming, which is what the dates have cost you.

They have made every week a small failure. A man who is quietly late every single day cannot be at rest with anything, and the state of not being ready has become a thing with a moral weight on it instead of what it actually is, which is a season with a real name in scripture.

You are living in a named season and have been treating it as a delay, and it has never once been a delay. The written word gives the keeping its own line in the list, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a man who has been faintly late since June.

Saying the reason while you keep it

So tonight, one thing and one sentence, and the sentence belongs to you and not to them.

Pick up one thing you kept. Say out loud why you kept it. That is the whole of it.

You are able to state your own reason in your own house, and that reason has never once needed to survive somebody else's timescale. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man on a porch holding an old fishing reel, and Ecclesiastes 3:6 puts keeping and casting away side by side and picks neither.

And here is what saying it does, given three conversations this month.

Right now the only sentences that have been spoken out loud about this belong to other people. Yours has been entirely internal, which is why theirs feel authoritative. One sentence in your own voice puts something on your side of the ledger for the first time.

You are putting your own voice on the record, and your voice has never once been the least entitled to speak about your own house. The written word states both seasons plainly and lets the reader stand in one, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a man saying a short true thing on a porch in the evening.
