You know exactly what you are.
Nobody has to tell you. You could give them the tour yourself and point out the worst of it, and you would be accurate, and you would be quicker and harder about it than they would be.
The bags in the spare room. The drawer that does not close. The boxes in the garage you have moved twice without opening.
And underneath all of it, a thing you have never said to anybody, which is that you do not want to stop.
You want to want to stop. That is different. You have read the things and agreed with them and filled a bag once and taken it back out of the bin the same evening, and then sat on the floor beside it feeling something that was not quite shame and was not quite grief.
Here is what I am going to do in this article, and I want to be straight about it at the top.
I am not going to ask you to get rid of one single thing. Not one. Not today and not as a first step toward later.
What I want is the thing that happens in your chest when you walk past that spare room. That is what I am after, and the contents of the room are not in the way of it.

She kept all these things
There is a sentence about Mary that appears twice in Luke, and the verb in it is the one that has been apologized for in your house.
But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. (Luke 2:19, King James Version)
Kept. Not processed, not released, not moved on from. Kept, and the text says it approvingly, twice, as a description of a woman doing something right.
And what she kept were things nobody else in that room thought to keep. Small details. A shepherd's odd remark. The order of an evening. Things that had no use and would never have a use.
You have a keeping instinct that scripture describes without one word of apology, and that instinct has never once been a defect. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present with a woman who knows exactly what her spare room looks like, and Luke 2:19 records a woman keeping what others let go and calls it pondering.
Now I want to be careful here, because this is not a verse that makes a case for your garage.
It is not about objects. What it is about is the posture, and the posture is the thing you have been told is wrong about you. Holding on to something because it mattered is not a malfunction. It is a recognized way of being a person, and there is a woman in the gospel doing it.
You were made with a holding instinct and never with a hoarding fault, and the difference has never once been about quantity. The written word gives that keeping its own sentence and its own dignity, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a woman sitting on the floor beside a bag she has just unpacked.
The shame is newer than the keeping
Here is the part I most want you to hear, and it takes a minute to lay out.
You kept things for years before you felt bad about it. Think back. There was a period, probably a long one, when the drawer was just the drawer.
Something came in between. A person, a television show, a remark at a family gathering, a run of articles. And the keeping did not change at all, but the meaning attached to it did, and after that you were not a woman with a full drawer, you were a woman with a problem.
You were the same woman before that remark and after it, and the keeping has never once been what changed. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who can name the exact year it started to feel like a fault, and Luke 2:19 has no shame anywhere near its keeping.
So there are two things in that spare room and only one of them is yours.
The objects are yours. The verdict is not. Somebody else brought that in and it has been living in your house rent free ever since, and the reason emptying a bag never helped is that the bag was never where the weight was.
You are carrying a verdict that was handed to you, and it has never once been the same thing as the truth about you. The written word attaches no fault at all to a woman who holds on to things, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a woman who has been prosecuting herself for years.
Saying why, out loud
So today's work is small and it is entirely about the second thing.
Pick up one thing you kept. Not the hardest one. Any one.
And say out loud why you kept it. One sentence. In the room, with your actual voice.
You are allowed to give a reason out loud and have it stand, and the reason has never once had to satisfy anybody else. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman holding something and speaking to an empty room, and Luke 2:19 has a woman keep and ponder without explaining herself to a single person.
Here is why out loud and not in your head.
In your head, the reason arrives already accompanied by the counterargument. Out loud, it arrives on its own, in your voice, and it is usually a sentence like: I kept it because she gave it to me, or because that was the summer everything was all right.
Those are real reasons. They have been real the whole time and they have never once been allowed to finish a sentence without being interrupted.
You have had good reasons the whole time, and not one of them has ever been permitted to stand unchallenged in that house. The written word lets a woman keep her own reasons privately and never asks her to defend them, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a woman hearing her own reason out loud for the first time.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who knows exactly what she is.
You have kept things and stayed a whole person, and keeping has never once made you a lesser one. I am not asking you for one item and there is nothing here to keep up. Luke 2:19 says Mary kept all these things, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who lifts a verdict somebody else left in a house.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You were never the problem in that spare room, the verdict was, and the verdict came in from outside and can go back out. The written word keeps without apology, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you beside that shelf today.
One thing. One reason. Out loud.
Declare this over yourself
- Verdict that came into this house from outside, you are not mine and I have carried you for years about what I keep. Luke 2:19 says Mary kept all these things, so by the Holy Spirit I set you down today in the name of Jesus.
- Shame that arrived years later, you changed the meaning and you never changed one thing about me. The word gives a keeping woman her own sentence, and by the Holy Spirit I am done being ashamed of how much I hold on to.
- Father, You wrote down that she kept these things and You said it warmly and twice. Your word says Mary kept all these things and pondered them, so by Your Spirit I say one reason out loud today, and I put the thing back, and I keep my peace about it.
