Maintenance Is Not Failure

You wanted one big fix.

Not a small admission. It has shaped about fifteen years of how you have handled this house, and it is worth saying out loud because I do not think it ever has been.

The plan, in your head, has always been a single decisive intervention. A weekend. A skip. A system installed properly by somebody who knows what they are doing. After which the problem is solved, the way a leaking pipe is solved.

And every time you have been handed something ongoing instead, some part of you has read it as a failure to find the real answer.

That is why the nightly clearing is intolerable to you when it is only ten minutes. Ten minutes is nothing. Ten minutes a day forever, when you were promised a fix, is a permanent reminder that the fix did not arrive.

So the upkeep is not costing you time. It is costing you the same disappointment every evening, in small installments.

Let me go at the belief underneath, because the belief is the expensive part, and there is a whole category in scripture that exists to correct it.

Day by day continually

There is an instruction in Numbers about an offering, and the word attached to it is the point.

This is the offering made by fire which ye shall offer unto the LORD; two lambs of the first year without spot day by day, for a continual burnt offering. (Numbers 28:3, King James Version)

A continual burnt offering. Morning and evening, every single day, for the entire life of that nation.

Nobody ever completed it. There was no point at which the offering had been sufficiently made and the practice could stop. The continual part is not a limitation of the system. It is the system.

You are keeping something continual, and the continual has never once been the failed version of permanent. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man who has been waiting fifteen years for a fix, and Numbers 28:3 sets the offering day by day and names the continual as the design.

And here is what would have been lost if it had been a one time event.

A single enormous offering would have been a transaction. Daily offering was a relationship, morning and evening, for generations, and the dailiness was what made it a life rather than a payment.

You were handed a relationship where you asked for a transaction, and the relationship has never once been the inferior deal. The written word puts the word continual right into the name of the thing, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a man who has read ten minutes a day as a standing insult.

What the belief has cost

Let me count the cost of the one big fix, because it has been expensive and it has been quiet.

It has cost you fifteen years of not doing the small thing. Why would a man invest in upkeep if upkeep is a placeholder for the real answer? So the small things did not get done, and the house got worse, and the fix got bigger and less likely.

You were holding out for something and never once neglecting anything, and holding out has never once been laziness. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man who has been waiting for the right answer since his forties, and Numbers 28:3 asks for morning and evening rather than one large act.

And there is a second cost, which is the one your family would name.

A man waiting for a fix cannot enjoy the house he has. There is always a better version of it about to begin, so the current one is provisional, and nobody wants to live in a provisional house including the man waiting.

You have been living in a provisional house, and it has never once been provisional to anybody else who lives in it. The written word builds the continual into the arrangement permanently, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a man who has not settled into his own home in fifteen years.

One surface, twice, as the design

So here is the work, and it is the smallest thing in this article on purpose.

Choose one surface. Clear only that one tonight, and clear the same one again tomorrow.

And do it not as a stopgap. Do it as the actual thing, because it is the actual thing.

You are doing the real work and never a placeholder, and the daily has never once been a substitute for something better. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man clearing one section of counter on two evenings, and Numbers 28:3 calls the twice daily offering continual and never temporary.

Here is the specific thing to notice on the second evening.

There will be a small voice that says this is not solving anything. That voice is the fix talking, and it has had fifteen years of airtime and has produced nothing.

Do it anyway, and let the voice say what it says, and notice that the counter is clear at the end of it either way.

You are working while a voice objects, and that voice has never once been able to produce what it promised. The written word names the continual as the design and never as a stopgap, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a man clearing a counter while something in him calls it pointless.
