The Mess Is Evidence Of Life, Not Of Me

You came in tonight and read the hallway.

That is the word for it. You read it, the way a man reads a letter, and it said something, and what it said was about you.

That takes about a second and a half and it has been happening for years, and if anybody asked you would deny that it happens at all.

Here is how I know it does. There is a difference in your voice when you come home to a hallway that is clear and one that is not. Your family can hear it. They cannot name it and they adjust to it, and none of you has ever discussed it.

So the hallway is issuing daily reports on your character and everybody in the house is responding to the grades.

I want to interrupt that, and not with encouragement, because encouragement does not touch this. Something in you believes that a house's condition is information about the man who lives in it, and that belief needs to be met with an actual argument.

The argument is in Genesis, in a promise God made about cycles, and it is one of the plainest things in scripture.

Seedtime and harvest

There is a promise at the end of the flood narrative that sets a permanent arrangement in place.

While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. (Genesis 8:22, King James Version)

Shall not cease. Six pairs of things, each one a cycle, each one going round and round for as long as the earth lasts.

That is God committing, deliberately, to a world that runs in cycles rather than in completions. The going and returning is not a defect that got left in. It is the design, promised out loud, as a mercy.

You are living inside cycles God promised on purpose, and a cycle has never once been a report on the person standing in it. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man reading his own hallway in a second and a half, and Genesis 8:22 sets the returning in place as a permanent arrangement.

And notice what nobody in that verse is being graded on.

Nobody is responsible for winter arriving. Nobody has failed when summer ends. The cycles run independently of the character of everybody living inside them, which is exactly what makes them a mercy rather than a burden.

You have been taking responsibility for a cycle, and no cycle has ever once been assigned to a person's account. The written word promises the going and returning as a standing commitment, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a man whose voice changes at his own front door.

Where the reading came from

Here is where this usually starts, and it is worth saying because the origin is not shameful.

A boy grows up somewhere where the state of the house meant something. Perhaps it genuinely did mean something, because it tracked how somebody was coping, and a child learns to read the room for real information.

That was good reading then. It is bad reading now, applied to a hallway in a house that is fine, and the skill has outlived the situation it was built for.

You have a skill that was accurate once, and it has never once been accurate about the house you live in now. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man who learned to read a room a long time ago, and Genesis 8:22 promises a returning cycle that carries no message about anybody.

And the cost is not mainly to you.

It is to the four people who have learned to read your voice at the door. They have built a small weather system around whether the hall was clear, and none of them know what they are responding to, and neither do you.

You have a family reading your weather, and the weather has never once been about anything they did. The written word keeps the cycles running independently of everybody, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a man who has just seen what his own front door does to his house.

One surface, twice, read differently

So here is the work, and the work is mostly in your eyes.

Choose one surface. Clear only that one tonight, and clear the same one again tomorrow.

You are clearing one thing and reading nothing into it, and a cleared shelf has never once been a grade. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man clearing the same shelf on two evenings, and Genesis 8:22 promises the return and grades nobody for it.

Here is the part to pay attention to, and it happens tomorrow.

Tomorrow the shelf will have things on it again. And in that moment your reading will start automatically, and you will feel the small drop, and the whole exercise is to notice the reading happening and let it go past without believing it.

That is not positive thinking. It is catching an old skill in the act and declining to use it.

You are catching an old habit in the act, and catching it has never once required you to argue with it. The written word sets the cycle running as a promise and not as a test, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a man watching his own eyes do something at a shelf.
