Six feet of counter, every evening, for about nine years.
You could do it with your eyes shut. Plates, cups, the thing the children left, the bag, the post. Eight minutes, maybe ten.
And the counter is fine. That is not what is wrong here.
What is wrong is what has grown up around those eight minutes. Somewhere in the last few years, doing it stopped feeling like a task and started feeling like a sentence. Like something you are serving rather than something you are doing.
The tell is the sigh. There is a specific sigh you do at about half past eight, and your wife has probably heard it three thousand times, and you do not hear it at all.
And here is what that sigh is actually saying: this again.
Not this is hard. Not I am too tired. This again. Which is the sound of a man who has started to feel that the repetition is itself the problem, and that a life where the same six feet needs doing every night is a life that is going wrong somewhere.
Let me go at that, because the repetition is not the problem, and there is a line in the Lord's prayer that has been sitting on this for two thousand years.

Give us day by day
There is a version of the Lord's prayer in Luke with a phrase in it that Matthew does not have.
Give us day by day our daily bread. (Luke 11:3, King James Version)
Day by day our daily bread. He says the daily part twice, in one short line, which is either redundant or it is the point.
It is the point. The prayer is not asking for a supply that ends the asking. It is asking for today, and it is built to be prayed again tomorrow, and the praying again is not a sign that the first one did not work.
You are asking for today and never for the whole year, and the asking again has never once been evidence that anything failed. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man at a counter at half past eight, and Luke 11:3 doubles the dailiness on purpose in one short sentence.
Now think about what a single delivery version would actually be.
A man who received a year's bread in one delivery would not pray that prayer again. He would have what he needed and would not come back, and the arrangement that keeps him in daily contact would be over.
The dailiness is not a flaw in the arrangement. It is the arrangement.
You have been treating the returning as a flaw in the design, and it has never once been anything but the design. The written word asks for bread on a day by day footing and calls that normal, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a man who has done the same eight minutes three thousand times.
What actually wore you down
So if it is not the counter and it is not the eight minutes, what is it?
It is the meaning that got attached. Nine years ago it was just a counter. Somewhere along the line it became a verdict about the shape of your life, and every evening since has been serving that verdict rather than wiping a surface.
And a man can carry eight minutes forever. Nobody can carry a nightly verdict.
You were carrying a verdict and never eight minutes, and no amount of the eight minutes has ever once been what tired you. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man who has been serving a sentence in his own kitchen, and Luke 11:3 makes the daily request a normal shape and not a punishment.
And notice what the same eight minutes looks like with the meaning taken off.
It is a man closing a day. Putting the room back to how it starts. Doing the thing that lets four people wake up tomorrow into a kitchen that works. That is not a sentence. That is somebody keeping a house for people he loves, which is what it always was.
You are closing a day for people you love, and that has never once been the same thing as serving a sentence. The written word puts the daily provision inside a prayer said by a family, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a man who has not seen his own eight minutes properly in years.
One surface, twice, on purpose
So here is the work, and you are going to think it is trivial, and the triviality is the point.
Choose one surface. Clear only that one tonight, and clear the same one again tomorrow.
You are doing the daily thing deliberately for once, and doing it on purpose has never once been the same as doing it under duress. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man clearing the same surface twice with his eyes open, and Luke 11:3 asks day by day and expects to ask again.
Here is the one difference from the other three thousand times.
Tonight it gets done on purpose, as a chosen act, rather than because the evening arrived and it had to be done. And tomorrow it gets done again, known about in advance, which removes the ambush.
The sigh at half past eight is a man being ambushed by something he already knew. Do it deliberately twice and the ambush has nowhere to stand.
You are removing an ambush rather than a task, and the task has never once been what needed removing. The written word says the daily part twice so that nobody can mistake it for a one time request, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a man who chose the eight minutes on purpose tonight.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man sighing at half past eight.
You are asking for today and never for the whole year, and the dailiness has never once been the sentence you took it for. I am not asking you to do more and I am not giving you a system. Luke 11:3 says give us day by day our daily bread, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes a verdict off a man's evening.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You were never worn down by eight minutes, you were worn down by what they had come to mean, and the meaning came off without touching the counter. The written word doubles the daily and calls it the normal shape, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you at that counter tonight.
One surface. Tonight, and again tomorrow, on purpose.
Declare this over yourself
- Sigh at half past eight, you are the sound of a man being ambushed by something he already knew. Luke 11:3 says give us day by day our daily bread, so by the Holy Spirit I take the eight minutes on purpose tonight in the name of Jesus.
- Verdict about the shape of my life, you attached yourself to a counter nine years ago and you were never in the wiping. The word asks for today and comes back the next day, and by the Holy Spirit I am done serving a sentence in my own kitchen.
- Father, You taught them to ask for bread day by day and You said the daily part twice. Your word says give us day by day our daily bread, so by Your Spirit I close the day for the people I love, and I do it again the next evening, and I do it gladly.
