My Mother Finished One Thing At A Time

Your mother did one shelf a week.

Not a dramatic shelf. The one in the pantry with the jars, or the one in the hall with the shoe polish and the string. She would do it on a Tuesday afternoon with the radio on, and it took her about half an hour, and then she stopped and made a cup of tea.

She did that for about twenty years, and her house was not immaculate and it was never a wreck either. It just stayed within a range.

And you watched her do it approximately a thousand times.

Now you are in your own house and you cannot do it. Not will not. Cannot get yourself to. You look at a shelf and something in you says that is not going to make a difference, and you go and do something else, and the something else is never the shelf.

Which is strange, because you are not lacking the information. You have seen the method performed a thousand times by somebody you loved and trusted.

So the method is not missing. Something happened between watching it and doing it, and that is what I want to find, because the thing you are missing is smaller than you think and it is probably not effort.

Little by little

There is a line in Proverbs about how things actually accumulate, and it is not the line people quote.

Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase. (Proverbs 13:11, King James Version)

The second half is the part that matters here, and older translations bring out what the Hebrew is doing: gathering by hand, a little at a time, is what increases.

The contrast is not between lazy and hardworking. It is between a sudden lump and a gathering. One of those two shapes holds and the other does not, and the verse is quite calm about which.

You were raised on the shape this verse describes, and the gathering has never once been the lesser way to do it. Proverbs 13:11 sets a slow accumulation against a sudden one and prefers the slow, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman remembering a radio on a Tuesday afternoon.

Now notice what your mother's Tuesday actually was.

It was a gathering. Half an hour, one shelf, stop. Repeated for twenty years without ever once being a project. She was not maintaining a system and she was not on a plan, she was doing the thing the verse describes, and the range her house stayed in was the result.

You have watched a scriptural method performed weekly for twenty years, and that watching has never once left you. The written word describes increase by small gathering, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a woman standing in her own kitchen wondering why she cannot do a thing she has seen a thousand times.

What actually went missing

Here is what usually happened, and see if it fits.

Somewhere between her kitchen and yours, the scale changed. You did not decide it. It came in through a hundred articles and a dozen conversations and a decade of pictures of finished rooms.

Her unit was one shelf. The unit you inherited from everywhere else is a room, or a weekend, or a whole house transformed. And when you go to do her method with the new unit, it does not work, because the method was never built to carry that.

You are running the right method at the wrong size, and the size was handed to you by strangers and never once by her. Proverbs 13:11 puts increase on the small gathering, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land for a woman who inherited a method and then had the scale swapped out from under it.

And there is a second loss, which is the stopping.

She stopped. That is half of what you watched and it is the half that never gets described when people talk about her sort of housekeeping. She did one shelf and she made tea. She did not go on to the second shelf because she felt good, and she did not feel guilty about the other eleven.

You were watching a woman stop for twenty years, and the stopping has never once been the part that did not matter. The text is content with a gathering and does not chase a total, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a woman who has been remembering only half of what she saw.

Doing her Tuesday

So today is her Tuesday, at her scale, with her stop in it.

One drawer, because a drawer is even smaller than her shelf, and starting under the inherited scale is the whole point.

You are allowed to start under the size you were handed, and going smaller than she went has never once been going backward. Proverbs 13:11 sets no floor at all under the gathering, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman choosing a drawer instead of a shelf.

Everything out. Put back what you want. Shut it. Then a cup of tea, or whatever your version of that is, and no second one.

You are doing an ordinary Tuesday the way you watched it done, and an ordinary Tuesday has never once been a small ambition. Proverbs 13:11 calls a hand gathering little by little an increase, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman in her own kitchen with the radio on.

And the next one is not tomorrow.

Next week, or the week after, or whenever. The gap is not laziness, the gap was in the method you watched. A shelf a week was a shelf a week, not a shelf a day held back by weak will, and copying the gap is copying the method.

You are allowed a whole week before the next one, and that gap has never once been the part where you failed. The written word praises the gathering and never sets a pace for it, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a woman who has stopped on purpose and is not restless about it.
