The List In My Head Grows Faster Than I Work

This message is for the man whose mental list outruns every session he attempts, who needs one item that stays done

You got up this morning with three things in mind and by the time the coffee was made there were eleven.

Not written down. There is no paper. It is a list that lives somewhere behind your eyes and it works all night, and by seven in the morning it has already been busy for hours.

The shelf in the hall. The bag by the back door. The box under the bed you have not looked in since the move. The pile on the chair in the spare room, which is not a pile so much as a small geography now.

And here is the thing that makes it exhausting rather than merely long: the list grows faster than you can work.

You did two things last Saturday. Genuinely did them, all the way. And by the following Saturday the list had four new items on it, so the two you finished made no visible difference to the total, and the total is the only number you have ever been able to see.

So you have started measuring your Saturdays against a number that goes up no matter what you do.

That is not a character problem. That is an arithmetic problem, and I want to spend some time on it with you, because a man can work hard for years against a number like that and end up believing something about himself that is simply not true.

Nobody in your house is failing. Something in the counting is off.

The List In My Head Grows Faster Than I Work

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do

There is a line in Ecclesiastes that people usually read as a rousing sort of verse, a get-on-with-it verse, and that is not what it says at all.

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might. (Ecclesiastes 9:10, King James Version)

Read the first half again slowly. Whatsoever thy hand findeth.

Not whatsoever thy head can list. Not whatsoever the house requires. Whatsoever your hand finds, which is a very small and very physical phrase, and it means the thing that is actually within reach of the fingers on the end of your arm right now.

A hand cannot find eleven things. A hand finds one thing, and holds it, and works on it, and then finds the next one. The verse assumes a person doing one thing at a time and it does not apologize for that, and it never once asks the man to survey the whole, and it never once mentions a total.

You have been handed one thing at a time and never the whole count, and the list behind your eyes has never once been the work. Ecclesiastes 9:10 puts the task in the hand rather than in the head, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present with a man at a kitchen table at seven in the morning.

So the verse and your Saturday are not talking about the same unit.

Your Saturday has been organized around the total, which is a thing no hand can hold. The verse is organized around the one, which is the only thing a hand has ever been able to hold.

And once you see that, a lot of what has been happening in your house makes sense in a different way.

You were never given the whole house to lift in one morning, and nobody who ever built anything was. The written word puts one task into one hand, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a man who has been trying to carry the count.

The list is not the work

Here is the thing I want to name plainly, because naming it wrong is what has cost you four years.

The list in your head is not a record of work outstanding. It is a record of everything you ever noticed.

Those are two different documents. Work outstanding is finite and would shrink. A record of noticing grows every time you walk through your own hallway with your eyes open, which is why it grows while the work is going on, and why it grew most on the two Saturdays of hardest work.

You have been treating an observation log like a work order, and then reading the gap between them as evidence about your character.

You have been reading a list of things you noticed as though it were a list of things you failed, and noticing something has never once been the same as owing it. Ecclesiastes 9:10 speaks of what the hand finds, which is one thing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who quiets a head that has been counting since four in the morning.

Now think about what happens to a man who does that for four years.

Every hour of honest work ends with the total higher than when he started. So the work stops producing the one thing work is supposed to produce, which is the feeling of having got somewhere. And when a man works and gets nowhere for long enough, he stops starting, and then he calls the not-starting laziness, and he is wrong about that too.

You are a man who has been working against a number that was designed to go up, and the not-starting was arithmetic and never once was it laziness. The text hands one task to one hand and says nothing about a total, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a man who has been quietly sentencing himself on a Saturday.

One item, all the way to the end

So what actually settles it is not more effort. There is plenty of effort in this house already. What settles it is one item carried all the way to the end.

All the way to the end means something specific. It means the drawer is emptied, what you want is back in it, the drawer is shut, and nothing about that item is outstanding in any way. There is no second stage. There is no next weekend for it.

That is the experience your four years have been missing. Not achievement. Completion.

Because here is what completion does that progress does not: a completed thing leaves the list. It is the only thing that ever leaves the list. Progress on nine items leaves nine items on the list, all of them now with an asterisk beside them, and an asterisk is heavier than nothing.

You have not been short on effort, you have been short on endings, and one item carried to the end is a settled thing. Ecclesiastes 9:10 says to do the found thing with your might, which is the whole instruction and there is no second clause about the rest of the house, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man the moment a drawer is shut and done.

And the size of the item is chosen for exactly one reason, which is that it has to be guaranteed to finish.

Not likely to finish. Guaranteed. Small enough that a phone call in the middle of it cannot stop it, small enough that a bad night's sleep cannot stop it, small enough that you could do it badly and it would still be finished.

A drawer is that size. That is the only reason a drawer is in this article.

You are holding a unit small enough that finishing it is certain, and certainty was the whole reason the drawer was chosen. The written word asks for might on the one found thing and asks nothing about the nine behind it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man who has not finished anything in four years.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man sitting at a kitchen table with eleven things behind his eyes.

You have one item in your hand and never the whole count, and the list in your head has never once been the work. I have no system for you and there is nothing here to keep up. Ecclesiastes 9:10 says whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who quiets a head that has been counting since before it was light.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You were never failing, you were counting a total no hand was ever asked to hold, and the arithmetic was against you and you were not. The written word puts one task in one hand, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you at that drawer today.

One item. All the way to the end. Then stop.

Declare this over yourself

  1. List behind my eyes, you are a record of what I noticed and you were never a record of what I owe. Ecclesiastes 9:10 puts the work in my hand and not in my head, so by the Holy Spirit I take one item today and I finish it in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that says I am the reason, the total went up while I worked and that is arithmetic and it is not my character. The word gives one thing to one hand with no mention of a count, and by the Holy Spirit I am done sentencing a man who has been working hard.
  3. Father, You gave a man one thing to find with his hand and his own might to do it with. Your word says whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, so by Your Spirit I carry one item all the way to the end, and I shut the drawer, and I stop there.
