The Quiet After One Thing Is Done

There is a sound your house makes that you have probably never heard.

It is not silence. The fridge is still going. It is the particular quiet that happens in a room when one thing in it has stopped asking for anything.

A drawer that is done does not speak. It sits there, closed, finished, and your eye can go over it without anything happening in your chest.

Every other surface in that kitchen says something as you pass it. Small things, not shouts. The corner of the counter says later. The chair says soon. The second drawer down says one day, in the voice it has used for three years.

You have been living in a room full of low voices and calling it normal, and it is normal, and it is also a considerable amount of noise to carry around all day.

Here is what I want for you today, and it is not a tidy kitchen.

One square foot of that room going quiet. One place your eye can land where nothing is being asked of you.

That is a real thing and it is available tonight, and it has almost nothing to do with how much of the house is sorted.

Quieted like a child

There is a line in Psalm 131 where David describes his own soul, and the image he reaches for is a small one.

Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother. (Psalm 131:2, King James Version)

Quieted myself. Not silenced. Not emptied. Quieted, which is what happens when the thing that was pulling stops pulling.

A weaned child is not a child who has learned to want nothing. It is a child who is no longer being drawn somewhere by a hunger that used to run the whole afternoon, and who can therefore just be in a room.

You were made for the quiet that comes when something stops pulling, and that quiet has never once been the same as emptiness. Psalm 131:2 describes a settling rather than a silencing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present with a woman in a room full of small voices.

Now here is why that verse is in an article about a drawer.

An unfinished thing pulls. That is what unfinished means, physically, in a room. It has a small claim on the attention of anybody who passes it, and it does not stop making that claim until it is done.

You have been in a room of small claims all day, and the tiredness has never once been about what the room looks like. The written word puts the quiet on the far side of the pulling stopping, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a woman who has not had a quiet square foot in years.

Why the quiet has never arrived

Here is the mechanism, and I suspect it will be recognizable.

Nothing in that house has been allowed to reach done. Every session has ended in the middle, or ended with a next stage, or ended with a mental note. And a thing with a next stage attached is still pulling, at exactly the same volume as before.

So the quiet has not been withheld from you and it has not failed to work. It has simply never had the condition it needs, which is one thing genuinely closed.

You were never denied the settling, the condition for it was never met once, and the settling has never once been the thing you were short of. Psalm 131:2 has a man describe a state that follows a stopping, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land for a woman who has never had a finished corner of her own.

And there is a second reason, which is subtler.

Even when something does get done, it usually gets immediately spent on the next thing. The drawer is shut and in the same breath the eye goes to the cabinet, and the quiet that was about to arrive gets sold before it lands.

You have been selling the quiet before you ever got to stand in it, and standing in it has never once been a waste of four minutes. The text records a man deliberately behaving and quieting himself, which takes time and intention, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a woman in a kitchen at dusk with nothing to do.

Listening on purpose

So there are two halves to tonight, and the second one is the one that matters.

The first half is the drawer. Everything out, put back what you want, shut it. Twenty minutes at most.

The second half is standing there for one minute afterward and listening to that part of the room. That is not a poetic instruction. It is the actual assignment, and if you skip it you will have tidied a drawer and gained nothing.

You are allowed to stand in your own kitchen doing nothing for one minute, and doing nothing has never once needed to be justified. Psalm 131:2 gives the quieting its own sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman standing still in front of a closed drawer.

And let me tell you what you are listening for, because it is subtle and you will miss it if you expect something large.

You are listening for the absence of one small voice. Not peace descending. Not a feeling. One of the low voices in that room has stopped, and the space where it was is what you are standing in.

You are listening for one voice that has gone, and one voice gone has never once been too small a thing to stand still for. The written word describes a soul settling like a weaned child, which is a very small and very ordinary picture, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that land for a woman noticing a quiet she has never heard in her own house.
