The Shame Is Newer Than The Keeping

There was a year when your house was just your house.

You had things in it. Quite a lot of things. The dresser drawer was full and the top of the wardrobe was full and you would have described none of that as a situation.

Then at some point it became a situation.

And I would guess, if you sat with it for a minute, that you could put a date on it. Not because you marked it. Because something happened, and after it the same drawer meant something different.

Maybe a sister said a thing in a kind voice. Maybe you watched a show where a woman's house was shown as a cautionary tale and you recognized a shelf. Maybe it was a run of articles over a winter.

The drawer did not change that year. Not one item went into it that had not been going in for a decade.

What changed was that a meaning got attached, from outside, by somebody who was not in your life and did not know what was in there.

And you have been living under that meaning ever since, and it has cost you more than the drawer ever did.

Hitherto hath the LORD helped us

There is a moment in first Samuel where a man does something that would get him talked about today.

Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us. (1 Samuel 7:12, King James Version)

He kept a rock. He put it somewhere specific so that he would see it, and he gave it a name, and the name was about something that had happened.

That stone had no function. You could not use it for anything. Its entire purpose was to be a physical object that carried a memory, standing in a place where a person would walk past it.

You were made by a God who sets stones up on purpose, and a thing kept for what it carries has never once been clutter to Him. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who can name the year her drawer became a problem, and First Samuel 7:12 has a prophet keep an object for its meaning alone.

Scripture is full of this and it is never once treated as a weakness.

Stones from a riverbed set up so children would ask. A pot of manna kept inside the ark. A staff kept. A coat kept. The people of God have always put physical things where they can see them so the things can say something that words go flat saying.

You have been doing something scripture does constantly, and doing it has never once put you outside anything. The written word records kept objects across both testaments without embarrassment, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a woman who has been quietly reclassified by a remark.

What the sentence actually did

Here is the mechanism, and it is worth seeing clearly because it explains why nothing has helped.

The sentence did not add anything to your house. It added a frame around what was already there.

Frames are strong. The same drawer inside one frame is a woman's life kept where she can see it. Inside the other frame it is evidence of a problem. Same drawer, same items, same woman, and an entirely different afternoon.

You are living inside a frame somebody handed you, and the frame has never once been a fact about what is in that drawer. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who has been looking at her own life through a stranger's caption, and First Samuel 7:12 frames a kept stone as help remembered.

And this is why every bag you have filled has failed to fix anything.

You were treating the contents when the weight was in the frame. Remove nine items from a drawer inside the wrong frame and you have a slightly emptier drawer and the identical feeling, which is exactly what happened, which is why you stopped.

You were never failing at the work, you were doing work on the wrong thing entirely, and the bags were never going to reach it. The written word puts the meaning of a kept object in the naming of it, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a woman who has filled and unpacked more bags than she would admit.

Naming it back

So the work is naming, and it is the same work Samuel did.

He did not just keep the stone. He said out loud what it was for. Hitherto hath the LORD helped us. The object plus the sentence is the whole practice, and the sentence is the part your house has never had.

You are able to put your own caption on your own drawer, and nobody else's caption has ever once been the true one. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman naming a thing out loud on her own front step, and First Samuel 7:12 pairs a kept stone with a spoken reason.

Here is what that looks like tonight, and it is one sentence long.

Pick up one thing you kept. Say out loud why. Not a defense, not an argument with your sister, just the actual reason, which is usually short and usually about a person.

You are giving one object its real name back, and the real name has never once needed a witness to be true. The written word lets a man name his own stone without a committee, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a woman speaking a short true sentence in an ordinary room.
