There are four pairs of shoes by your front door and two of them are not yours.
There is a bag on the third stair that belongs to somebody who will come back for it. There is a jacket over the newel post. There is a school thing on the hall table that has been there since Thursday.
You came in tonight and took all of that in within about two seconds, and something in you dropped, and you would find it hard to explain to anybody why.
Here is what happened in those two seconds.
You did not see shoes. You ran an assessment, and the assessment came back with a verdict, and the verdict was about you. Something about not being on top of it. Something about the kind of man who lets a hallway get like this.
And here is what was actually in front of your eyes: four people are living in this house.
Those are not two readings of the same scene. One of them is what is there. The other is a machine that has been running in you for years, taking ordinary domestic evidence and converting it into a report card.
Tonight I want to get at the machine, because the shoes are fine.

They were round about my table
There is an image in Psalm 128 of a house with people in it, and the psalm is entirely positive about the crowding.
Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table. (Psalm 128:3, King James Version)
Round about thy table. Not neatly at it. Round about it, which is a word for people at various angles taking up room.
And the whole psalm frames that as the blessing itself. Not a cost of the blessing, not something to be managed. The crowding is the picture of a man's life going well.
You are standing in the picture that psalm calls blessing, and a house with people round the table has never once been a house in trouble. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man taking in his own hallway in two seconds, and Psalm 128:3 puts the crowding in the middle of the blessing.
Now look at what your machine did with the same information.
It took the identical facts, four people and their belongings, and produced a verdict about your competence. The psalm took those facts and produced a description of a good life. Same hallway.
You were handed the same evidence and given a completely different reading, and the reading has never once come from the hallway itself. The written word turns a full house into a picture of favor, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a man who has been quietly graded by his own front door for years.
Where the machine came from
Here is where it usually comes from, and there is no blame in it anywhere.
Somewhere you took on the idea that the state of the house is a readout of the man. Not a thought you had. An assumption, absorbed, probably from a household where it was true or where somebody said it was.
And once that is installed, every surface in the house is an instrument, and a man cannot walk through his own hall without being measured.
You have been living inside an instrument and never inside a home, and no house was ever once designed to be read that way. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man who has been measured by a newel post since he was thirty, and Psalm 128:3 reads a crowded room as favor and not as a score.
And here is what it has cost, and this is the part worth stopping on.
It has cost you the shoes. Those two pairs that are not yours belong to people you would die for, and for years now the sight of them has produced a small drop rather than anything else.
You have been losing the sight of your own children's shoes, and that loss has never once been worth what the assessment was protecting. The written word names the olive plants round the table as the thing itself, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a man who has just noticed what the machine has been eating.
One surface, twice, and the shoes stay
So here is tonight, and it is deliberately small, and the hallway is mostly staying as it is.
Choose one surface. The hall table, or one shelf. Clear only that one tonight, and clear the same one again tomorrow.
The shoes stay. The bag on the stair stays. Nobody is being asked to change how this family uses its own house.
You are clearing one thing and leaving four people's belongings exactly where they are, and leaving them has never once been letting something slide. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man wiping one shelf in a hallway, and Psalm 128:3 has the children round about the table and does not tidy them.
And here is the reason for doing it twice.
Tomorrow the shelf will have something on it again, because people live here. Doing it again, and feeling nothing, is how a man's hands learn that the return is the house working and not the man failing.
You are training your hands out of a verdict, and the shelf refilling has never once been the verdict it has been read as. The written word calls the full house the blessing, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a man clearing the same shelf on two ordinary evenings.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man who drops two seconds after he gets home.
You are looking at four people living, and the hallway has never once been a report on how you are doing. I am not asking for the shoes and I am not asking for the bag on the stair. Psalm 128:3 says thy children like olive plants round about thy table, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who switches off a machine a man has been running since he was thirty.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You were never looking at evidence against yourself, you were looking at your own family, and the psalm calls exactly that scene the blessing. The written word reads a crowded house as favor, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you in that hallway tonight.
One surface. Tonight, and again tomorrow. The shoes stay.
Declare this over yourself
- Machine that reads my hallway in two seconds, you turn four people living into a verdict about me and you were never accurate. Psalm 128:3 says thy children like olive plants round about thy table, so by the Holy Spirit I switch you off tonight in the name of Jesus.
- Assumption that a house is a readout of the man, you were absorbed and never decided, and you have cost me the sight of my own children's shoes. The word calls the crowded room the blessing, and by the Holy Spirit I am done being graded by my own front door.
- Father, You put the wife and the children round about the table and You called the whole crowded picture favor. Your word says like olive plants round about thy table, so by Your Spirit I clear one shelf tonight, and I leave the shoes, and I am glad of who is in this house.
