I Did It Right And It Still Came Back

You did it properly.

That is the thing that makes this one sting. You did not do a half version. You read the thing, you understood the thing, you followed the steps in order, and you did not skip the part everybody skips.

Four evenings. Everything out, everything sorted, everything with a place. You even did the last stage, the one about putting things back where they are used rather than where they look best.

And eleven weeks later the hall is exactly as it was.

Now, if you had cut corners, there would be a story. If you had rushed it, or skipped the last bit, or done it grudgingly, there would be a reason, and a reason is survivable.

You do not have one. You did everything right and it came back anyway, and a man with no explanation left will always build one out of himself.

The one you built is that there is something the matter with you specifically. That other people do this and it holds, and for you it does not, and that whatever the difference is, it is not fixable by effort because you already gave it your best effort.

That is a heavy conclusion to be carrying around, and I do not think it survives the first thing I want to show you.

New every morning

There is a line in Lamentations, written in the middle of a catastrophe, that describes how God's provision actually arrives.

They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:23, King James Version)

New every morning. Not once, at scale, permanently. Daily, arriving fresh, as a standing arrangement rather than a single event.

And the word used for that arrangement is faithfulness. The dailiness is the proof of it. A thing that had to be given only once would say less about the giver than a thing that arrives every morning without fail.

You are inside a daily arrangement and never a one time repair, and the daily has never once been the lesser design. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man whose hall came back in eleven weeks, and Lamentations 3:23 makes the arriving every morning the evidence of faithfulness.

Now hold that against what you expected.

You expected that doing it properly would buy a permanent state. That is a completely reasonable expectation about a bookshelf and a completely wrong one about a house, and nowhere in scripture does anything that matters get handled once and then stay handled.

You were expecting a one time settlement in a world that runs daily, and the expectation has never once been met by anybody. The written word gives mercy on a morning by morning basis, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a man who did four evenings properly and got eleven weeks.

Eleven weeks was the return

So let me put a different number in front of you, because the one in use around here has been zero.

This has been treated as having produced nothing. It produced eleven weeks. Eleven weeks of a hall that worked, of finding things, of a house that was easier on everybody in it.

That is not nothing. That is what four evenings buys, at the exchange rate that actually exists, and there is no technique that changes the rate.

You were paid in eleven weeks and have been recording it as zero, and that ledger has never once been accurate. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man who has been grading himself against a rate that does not exist, and Lamentations 3:23 sets the renewal on a daily schedule and calls it great faithfulness.

And here is why this matters more than the hall.

The conclusion you drew is about you, permanently, and it is the kind of conclusion that stops a man doing anything. Why would you spend four more evenings if four evenings produce nothing? So you have not, and will not, and the hall will get worse, and that will confirm the conclusion.

You have been trapped inside a conclusion that proves itself, and it has never once been true and it has always been self sealing. The written word refuses to treat a thing arriving again as a failure of the first time, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a man who has stopped bothering and knows he has stopped.

One surface, on two mornings

So here is the work, and it is deliberately built on the word morning.

Choose one surface. Clear only that one tonight, and clear the same one again tomorrow.

You are taking the daily version on purpose, and the daily version has never once been the consolation prize. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man clearing the same stretch of counter twice, and Lamentations 3:23 puts the renewing on the morning and never on a single occasion.

Here is what the second clearing does that no amount of thinking can.

It puts you through a return at a scale you can see the whole of. One evening to the next. Something comes back, you clear it, nothing about it means anything about you, and your hands get the lesson your head has refused to accept for eleven weeks.

You are getting the lesson into your hands where arguments could not reach it, and the second evening has never once been a defeat. The written word describes a faithfulness that has to show up again tomorrow to be what it is, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a man at the same counter two nights running.
