I Sorted It In January

You did the whole house in January.

Four days of it. You have a photograph somewhere from the third day, taken because you were proud of it, and you have not looked at that photograph in a long time.

It is September now and you would not be able to tell.

That is the sentence you have said to yourself and to two other people, and every time you say it something in you goes down a little further, because the conclusion attached to it is obvious and you reached it months ago.

The conclusion is that it did not work. That four days went into a house and the house absorbed them and gave nothing back, and that whatever is wrong here is not the kind of thing four days can fix.

I want to take that conclusion apart, because it rests on one assumption that nobody ever examines.

The assumption is that a sorted house is supposed to stay sorted. That the state you got it into in January was the real state, and that everything since has been a slide away from it.

That is not how a house that has people in it works. It has never been how one works, and nobody told you, and you have been reading nine months of ordinary life as nine months of personal failure.

There is a line in Proverbs that is almost rude about tidiness, and it deserves more attention than it gets.

Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox. (Proverbs 14:4, King James Version)

An empty stall stays clean. That is the joke and the whole point of the proverb. The cleanness of an empty stall is not an achievement, it is a symptom of there being nothing in it.

And the second half is the argument. The mess and the increase come from the same animal, and you cannot have the strength without the stall it lives in.

You have a house that shows the residue of being used, and a used house has never once been an untidy version of an empty one. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman comparing September to a photograph from January, and Proverbs 14:4 puts the cleanness and the emptiness together on purpose.

Now apply that to the nine months you cannot see.

In those months, four people lived. Homework happened on that table. Somebody was ill for two weeks and the house carried it. Christmas was planned in that kitchen and a birthday and a difficult week in June.

You were looking at nine months of increase and calling it a slide, and the residue has never once been separable from the living. The written word ties the mess and the strength to the same animal, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a woman who has been quietly grading herself since the spring.

What January actually bought

So let me be honest about what those four days did and did not buy, because the honesty is what makes the rest of this bearable.

They did not buy a permanent state. Nothing buys that. There is no version of four days that produces a house that holds still, and every article that implied otherwise was selling something.

What they bought was nine months of a house that was easier to live in than it would have been. That is real, it was spent, and spent is not the same as wasted.

You have spent something that was designed to be spent, and a thing that got used up has never once been a thing that failed. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who has been asking four days to do a year's work, and Proverbs 14:4 assumes the stall needs work because the ox is in it.

And here is the part that has actually been costing you.

Every time you look at the counter and think about January, you are running a comparison against a state that was never sustainable. That comparison has run maybe two hundred times since spring, and each time it delivers the same verdict about you.

You have been running a comparison against a state nobody can sustain, and it has never once returned an honest answer. The written word puts the clean stall on the side of emptiness, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a woman who has been losing the same argument with herself since March.

One surface, tonight and tomorrow

So here is the practical half, and the second half of the instruction is the important one.

Choose one surface. Not the worst one. Clear only that one, tonight.

Then clear the same one again tomorrow.

You are doing the same small thing twice on purpose, and the second time has never once been evidence that the first one failed. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman clearing the same three feet of counter on two consecutive evenings, and Proverbs 14:4 expects an occupied stall to need attention.

Here is why twice, and it is the whole of this article in one move.

Doing it twice teaches your hands something your head has not been able to learn: that returning is the job and not the failure. The first evening feels like progress. The second evening is where the lesson is, because the same surface has things on it again and you are going to clear it anyway, without any of it meaning anything about you.

You are learning with your hands what an argument could not teach you, and the second evening has never once been a defeat. The written word accepts the ongoing work as the price of the strength, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a woman at the same counter for the second night running.
