You have been waiting for the part where it ends.
Not consciously. But there has been a picture in the back of your mind for years, and in that picture there is a day when the house is done, and after that day the arrangement is different.
In that picture you are not clearing anything. Things are where they go. The house holds itself, and your relationship with it becomes something other than upkeep.
That day has not come and it is starting to seem like it is not going to, and that is the actual grief here. Not the counter. The picture.
Because as long as the picture exists, every single evening of clearing is a failure to arrive. You are not doing the work, you are failing to have finished, and those feel completely different from inside even when the hands are doing the same thing.
I want to take the picture away from you, which sounds cruel and is the kindest thing in this article.
There is no day. There has never been a day for anybody. And what is on the other side of that is not despair, it is the end of failing every evening, which you have been doing for about six years.

From the beginning of the year to the end
There is a description in Deuteronomy of how God relates to the land, and it is a description of attention rather than of a project.
A land which the LORD thy God careth for: the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year. (Deuteronomy 11:12, King James Version)
Always upon it. From the beginning of the year to the end. That is a description of continual attention, and it explicitly refuses to name a finishing point.
And the word used for it is care. Not maintenance, not upkeep, not a chore. Care, which is a word about a relationship and not about a task list.
You are doing something the text calls care, and care has never once had a completion date on it. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman waiting for a day that has no place in the design, and Deuteronomy 11:12 spans the whole year without naming an ending.
Now here is the thing to notice, and it takes the sting out of the whole subject.
Nothing that is alive is ever finished. A garden is not finished. A marriage is not finished. A body is not finished. Every single thing worth having runs on continual attention, and a house full of people belongs firmly in that category.
You were waiting for a house to behave like an object, and no house with people in it has ever once been one. The written word gives continual care to living ground and calls that the arrangement, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a woman who has been failing to arrive every evening for six years.
What the picture has cost
Let me count what the picture has taken, because that count has probably never been made.
Every evening of clearing has been filed as a failure rather than as care. Six years of that is about two thousand small failures, each one tiny, and two thousand tiny failures make a woman who is tired in a way that has nothing to do with the work.
You have been filing two thousand acts of care as failures, and not one of them has ever once been a failure. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who has been quietly losing every evening since a picture formed in her head, and Deuteronomy 11:12 names continual attention as care rather than as a task.
And it has taken something else, which is the noticing.
When the goal is the finish, the current state is only ever a distance from it. So you cannot see the room you are in. You can only see how far it is from the room in the picture, and the room you are actually in is quite a nice room with people in it.
You have not been able to see your own kitchen, and the picture has never once let you look at it directly. The written word holds a whole year of attention without a finish line in it, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a woman who has not properly looked at her own house in years.
One surface, twice, with no ending
So here is the practical half, and notice what is missing from it.
Choose one surface. Clear it tonight. Clear the same one tomorrow. And there is no third instruction and no plan after that.
You are doing something with no finish attached to it, and a thing with no finish has never once been a thing that failed. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman clearing the same square of counter on two evenings, and Deuteronomy 11:12 stretches its care from one end of the year to the other.
Here is what the second evening is teaching, and it is the whole article.
It teaches that the returning is the shape of the thing and not a verdict. You clear it, it comes back, you clear it again, and nothing in that sequence is a failure at any point, and your hands find that out faster than your head can be argued into it.
You are learning the shape of it with your hands, and the shape has never once been the shape of losing. The written word describes attention that runs the length of a year, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a woman at the same square of counter twice.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman waiting for a day that is not coming.
You are keeping something rather than finishing it, and keeping has never once been the failed version of finishing. I am not giving you a plan and there is no third instruction. Deuteronomy 11:12 says the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes a picture out of a woman's head after six years.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You were never failing to arrive, there was nowhere to arrive at, and two thousand evenings of care were filed under the wrong heading. The written word spans a whole year of attention with no ending in it, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you at that counter tonight.
One surface. Tonight, and again tomorrow. And then nothing.
Declare this over yourself
- Picture of the day this house is done, you have made every evening a failure to arrive and there was never anywhere to arrive at. Deuteronomy 11:12 says the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it, so by the Holy Spirit I let you go today in the name of Jesus.
- Filing system that calls care a failure, you have logged two thousand small defeats that were never defeats. The word gives continual attention the name of care, and by the Holy Spirit I am done losing every evening in my own kitchen.
- Father, You keep Your eyes on the land from the beginning of the year to the end and You never once named a finish. Your word says a land which the LORD thy God careth for, so by Your Spirit I clear one surface tonight, and the same one again the next evening, and I put something on it that I like.
