The House Was Full Again By Friday

You cleared the whole kitchen on Sunday and by Friday it was full again.

Now here is the part nobody looks at. Go back over the week and account for what arrived.

Tuesday somebody's mother sent a bag of things for the church sale and it is on the side. Wednesday your friend dropped in her daughter's things because she is between houses. Thursday you made four portions for the woman down the road and the containers are drying on the counter.

There is also a box for the food bank, and two coats somebody left, and a pile of things for the school.

Every single one of those is in your house because of something that went out of you.

You are not a woman whose house fills up. You are a woman whose house is a junction, and things move through a junction, and a junction is never going to look like a cupboard.

And you have been grading yourself as though it were a cupboard, every Friday, for years.

The oil kept coming

There is a story in second Kings about a widow, a jar of oil, and a very specific stopping point.

And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed. (2 Kings 4:6, King James Version)

Read what governs the supply. The oil ran as long as there was something to put it in. It did not run out. It stopped when the containers did.

The capacity of the house was the limit, not the generosity of the source, and the story is entirely approving of a house being filled to its capacity.

You have a house that fills to its capacity because something is flowing, and the filling has never once been evidence against you. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman counting a full counter on a Friday, and Second Kings 4:6 ties the pouring to the vessels and not to any fault in the woman.

And notice what she is doing throughout that story.

She is collecting vessels from neighbors, filling them, and passing them on. Her house is briefly full of other people's jars, and the fullness is the whole evidence that the thing is working.

You are running the kind of house that gets full while something good is going through it, and that fullness has never once been a mess. The written word measures the miracle by how full the house got, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a woman who has been grading herself every Friday for years.

The junction and the cupboard

So here is the distinction I want to put in your hands, because it is the whole article.

A cupboard is judged by what is in it. A junction is judged by what moves through it.

Your house is a junction. Things arrive because somebody needs something, and they leave because you gave it, and at any moment there is a certain amount in transit.

The amount in transit is not clutter and it is not backlog. It is the working stock of a house that is doing something.

You are looking at working stock, and working stock has never once been the same thing as a house going wrong. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who has never once had the right word for her own kitchen, and Second Kings 4:6 has a house fill up with borrowed jars in the middle of a rescue.

And I want to name the cost of having had the wrong word.

Every Friday, the same wave. And under the wave is a small suggestion that you are the problem here, when what is in front of you is the residue of six acts of kindness in five days.

You have been reading six kindnesses as a failure, and not one of them has ever once been anything but good. The written word counts the vessels and not the tidiness, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a woman who has been quietly apologizing for her own generosity.

One surface, twice, and everything stays in transit

So here is tonight, and everything in transit stays exactly where it is.

Choose one surface. A small one. Clear only that one tonight, and clear the same one again tomorrow.

The church sale bag stays. The containers stay. The food bank box stays. None of that is in your way, it is in motion.

You are keeping every single thing that is on its way somewhere, and none of it has ever once been in your way. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman clearing one small space in a busy kitchen, and Second Kings 4:6 keeps the jars in the house until they are full and then sends them on.

Here is what the one small space is for.

It is the space you hand things across. Every junction needs one square foot that is always clear, not so the house looks better, but so there is somewhere to put a dish down when somebody arrives with one.

You are making room for the next thing coming through, and that room has never once been about appearances. The written word has a woman ask for one more vessel and be given the room for it, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a woman clearing a handover space on her own counter.
