Two Weeks Later It Looks The Same

Fourteen days is about how long it lasts.

You know that number because you have watched it happen four or five times now. You do a proper go at the kitchen, and for two weeks it is genuinely different, and you notice it in the mornings and something in you is lighter.

And then there is a Tuesday when you look at the counter and it is back, and you cannot point to a day when it stopped being different.

That is the part that is worse than the mess. Not that it came back. That you cannot find the moment, which means you start wondering whether it was ever as good as you remember, and whether you are the kind of person who exaggerates their own efforts.

So now there are two losses. The counter, and your own account of what you did.

The second one is the serious one. A woman who has stopped trusting her own memory of her own work will stop doing the work, because there is no point doing something that will later be doubted.

I want to give you back the fourteen days. That is what this article is for, and it will not cost you one item and it will not require you to redo the kitchen.

The rivers run and the sea is not full

There is an observation at the start of Ecclesiastes that people usually read as gloom, and it is really a description of how things work.

All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again. (Ecclesiastes 1:7, King James Version)

Watch what he is actually saying. Water arrives constantly. The sea does not fill up. The water goes back where it came from and comes again.

There is no failure anywhere in that sentence. Nobody is being blamed for the sea not filling. It is simply a description of a cycle, written down by a man who noticed it and did not moralize about it.

You are inside a cycle the scripture describes without blame, and the returning has never once been a fault in the one watching it. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who cannot find the Tuesday it changed, and Ecclesiastes 1:7 records the going and the coming back as the shape of the thing.

And notice there is no moment in the verse either.

The rivers do not stop on a particular day. There is no point at which the sea is declared full or empty. The whole thing is continuous, which is exactly why you cannot find the day your kitchen changed, and the absence of that day is not a memory problem.

You were looking for a moment in something that has no moments in it, and your memory has never once been the thing at fault. The written word describes a continuous return with no turning point in it, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a woman who has started doubting her own account.

Giving the fourteen days back

So let me say the thing plainly, because I think you need it said by somebody who is not in your house.

The two weeks happened. The work got done, the kitchen was different, the mornings were noticeably lighter. All of that is true and none of it is undone by what the counter looks like now.

A thing that was real and then ended is not a thing that was imagined. Those are different categories and you have been filing one as the other.

You are holding a real fourteen days that ended, and an ended thing has never once been an imagined thing. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who has been quietly doubting herself since about March, and Ecclesiastes 1:7 lets the water arrive and depart without either being untrue.

And here is the second thing, which is about the counter as a record.

The counter is not a ledger. It records the last four days and nothing before that, and a surface with no memory cannot be evidence about two weeks in the spring.

You have been asking a countertop to testify about something it cannot possibly know.

You have been cross examining a witness that has no memory, and it has never once been able to tell you the truth about March. The written word observes the cycle and draws no conclusions about anybody's character from it, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a woman who has stopped trusting her own account of her own work.

One surface, twice

So here is the work, and it is built to rebuild the thing you actually lost.

Choose one surface, a small one. Clear only that one tonight, and clear the same one again tomorrow.

You are doing one small thing on two consecutive evenings, and the second evening has never once meant the first one did not happen. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman at the same small corner two nights running, and Ecclesiastes 1:7 has the water come back without anybody being to blame.

Here is what the two evenings actually do.

They give you a fourteen day cycle you can see the whole of. One night to the next is short enough to hold in your head, so nothing gets lost and nothing has to be remembered across months, and you get to watch a thing return without it meaning anything.

That is the fourteen days at a scale where your own memory cannot be taken from you.

You are watching the whole cycle inside twenty four hours, and nothing in it has ever once required you to remember March. The written word puts the whole circuit in one sentence, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a woman who can see both ends of something for the first time in a year.
